One Tough Cookie

Just like that six weeks have past.  Philip's awkward cast comes off on Monday.  We are all thrilled.

Philip has handled this trial with complete awesomeness.  He has never cried "why me?", rarely if ever complained.  Just did what he had to do to make himself better.  I pray he is always that emotionally tough.  I know where he gets it from and it makes me smile to see one of Chris' best qualities displayed in him.

life ain't too bad...Harry Potter on the Kindle and Starbuck's hot chocolate

There was the outpouring of support from our family, friends, church, school, etc.  Dad and Susan went above and beyond the call by sitting with Philip for lots of my carpool runs.  Both even drove William to school alone on several occasions.  Mom sat with Philip so I could attend the many Christmas school celebrations.  Church friends provided dinners for us for three weeks.  School friends showered Philip with gifts and mail over the six week period.  His teachers sent notes in the mail and special art and science projects to help fill his days.  I could go on and on...but to sum it up it felt good to be loved so well.

I think the experience changed all of us a little bit...a little bit for the better.  For six short weeks, we were able to see what it was like to be the parent/sibling etc. to a child with special needs.  We saw the adults that stared at us as we walked through the mall.  We experienced the warmth from everyone at the post office...everyone, including the postman, going out of their way to help this mother with an eight year old in a stroller and an odd looking contraption.  We answered the strangers questions.  And for the first time, my older two heard the words "we are praying for you" and understood what that meant.  And that's just our outlook from the public...

Then there was our learning experience at home.  It took a little more patience than normal from everyone.  Lots of strength from Chris and myself carrying Philip up and down the stairs.  Even Daniel said tonight before bed, "I'll be happy to not be his servant anymore."  Ah, sweet boy, what a good lesson for you...because until those words were spoken, you, too, never complained about your situation.  You fetched things for Philip, played games that he could play, and simply continued to be his best buddy without complaint.  Even when he got lots of positive attention.

I hope to always remember Philip and I's special time at home...one on one time you don't typically get with an eight year old with three younger siblings.  I'll remember the days spent in bed reading Harry Potter...I'd start reading and eventually fall asleep and he would then pick up and read aloud to me.  Or our trip to the atrium where I needed to get some work done and subsequently watched him get lost in his own work.  Upon leaving, he asked, "Mom, will you get me a Bible on my Kindle so I can read it anytime?"  Precious, precious memories.

at work in the atrium..copying a map of Israel
Tomorrow, Philip, Daniel, and I leave for Atlanta.  At some point during all of this, Daniel questioned me extensively on what Perthes disease is, what causes it, what does it look like, etc.  I tried to answer his questions to the best of my ability.  He finished with, "Mom, I think I need to see the x-rays of his good hip and bad hip so I can compare them."  Such a curious little guy.  So with a doctor's appointment that doesn't coincide with school, I thought it would be fun to take him along for the ride.  Get ready Dr. Schrader...the kid can certainly question you to death.  Should be fun!

Of course, another doctor's appointment means a little anxiety.  Yes, the cast is no fun, but it is an unpleasant that I know...one I have figured out.  I am a little nervous about the braces and how Philip is going to handle them.  A little anxious about his ability to walk once the cast is removed.  Concerned about school and how we can handle the stairs and braces there.  Each appointment brings anxiety...but eventually more answers...and hopefully one step closer to the healed hip.

We can do this!  We've come so far!

Christmas Memories

William and John were the first ones up...at 4:40 am.  They slept in John's bed together so that Dee could have her own room.  I quickly ushered them back to bed...snuggled with them both...and we slept until 6:00 am.  It wasn't long after that that we were all up and ready to head down the stairs.  There was definitely excitement in the air!

First, we inspected Santa's gifts.

Next it was wrapping paper everywhere!!

it's blurry...but these two got tickets to the Senior Bowl from Mom and Dad!

Soon it was time for GranGran and PopPop to join us for brunch!

After all our company left, we had some quiet time by the fire.  Philip, Daniel, and I played three different board games and Dad helped William build his Lego set.

Before long, we headed out to Cameron and Heather's for dinner.  Check out these good looking boys in their new clothes!

At Cameron and Heather's house, a surprise awaited the boys!  First, open your gifts...

and then outside for the gift that keeps on giving!

The boys were in heaven!!

Heather and Cameron fixed a delicious meal of stuffed flounder and grilled redfish.  Heather's sweet mom even made a special treat for the boys.

And don't even get me started on the red velvet cake with layers of cheesecake.  Needless to say, I needed a run this morning!

As we wound down for the night, Chris and I both commented on another Christmas passed.  We were thrilled that this Christmas night was so much calmer and drama-free without the tornado!  With thankful hearts, we closed the books on Christmas 2013.

Oh Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray.
Cast out our sin, and enter in.  Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell.
Oh come to us, abide with us, our great Lord Emmanuel!

Christmas Eve 2013

Christmas Eve started early in the kitchen making preparations for an early dinner.  We had some visitors during the day...

Finally, it was time to bathe little boys and get dressed for church.

Dee, Uncle Cameron and Aunt Heather, and the Hamms joined us for dinner.  Chris grilled a beef tenderloin that was incredible.  We had garlic mashed potatoes and salad.  We rushed off to church for a special Christmas Eve service with all the family.  You can read more about the service and see some pictures here.
It was overrun by the media due to the year anniversary of the tornado!

Back to the house for red velvet cake, cookies for Santa, and reindeer food.

Off to bed for four little boys.  Then lots of cleaning the kitchen and cooking brunch for the adults!  Excited to see what Santa brings tomorrow.

Joyful Morning...and Night!

Yesterday was the church's annual Christmas pageant.  It is usually held in the evening but we opted for a during the service program this time.

The morning was extremely rainy and I was quite concerned about how I was going to get four children (one that can not walk and in a cast that can't get wet), my camera, and my salad bowl across Dauphin Street by myself.  (Chris was at work and meeting us at church.)  Just as the clock showed it was time to go, the rain broke giving us a little reprieve.  And the angel told Mary "for nothing will be impossible with God!"

Daniel was our shepherd and his little brothers were his sheep.  How cute!

Everyone did great.  Philip was a trooper.  He opted to not be in the show but he sat with us cheering everyone on!

We had a delicious potluck dinner afterwards and even had a visit from Saint Nicholas!

Proud of the boys for their great performance.  We hurried home for some down time before our Springfield friends came over for dinner.  I love how they picked up without missing a beat.

And now it's Christmas Eve Eve according to my boys and we have a little work to do to get ready!

Santa!

Today the boys, GranGran, and I headed to the Eastern Shore Centre to do a little last minute shopping.

We even fit in a little visit with Santa!

A lunch at Panera and home for a quiet afternoon.  Thanks GranGran for the extra set of hands...couldn't have done it without you!

And They are Out!

Just like that the Christmas holidays have begun!  I will be so glad to wake up in the morning and forgo the hustle of getting boys to school.  Just relax and spend time with my peeps!!

We've had lots of Christmas parties these last two weeks.  Here's some memories in the making...

Two went aboard the Polar Express in their pajamas...

Daniel's Gingerbread house party...where he and I ate more than we decorated!!...

Making cookies for all of our teachers...

William's Christmas party...

Daniel's Christmas program and Christmas party...

After all the happenings, we had to get out.  It is so hard to go anywhere with Philip in his cast and yet there are days when I know that if we do not leave the house everyone (including me) is going to lose it.  So today, we headed to the park for a picnic, playground time, feeding the ducks, and a long walk.

Just what the doctor ordered.  Wore little boys out...result being a quiet afternoon!

Wishing you a peaceful conclusion to this Advent season!
