Unexpected Company

I know many families travel over Christmas holidays.  Lots visit grandparents that do not live close by.  Thankfully, for our boys, both sets of grandparents live within a mile.  We spend lots of time with them and create memories weekly if not daily.

However, overnight trips are fun and something they miss out on.  They don't get to wake up and go to bed knowing their grandparents are near by.  While I wouldn't have it any other way, I know those are special memories for children that do visit grandparents out of town.

Well, this Christmas we had the tornado.  And while Dottie's house was looking like this...

She was spending some quality time here with us.  The boys loved having her around and I enjoyed the extra set of hands.  I know the days have been hard on her, but I know they created special little memories for four little boys!

Christmas Memories

If you have never visited our home during Christmas, you may not know that we keep a Christmas scrapbook.  In it, I record our memories of the Christmas season.

Well, I have a bad habit.  Lots of years, I don't get the previous year completed until the next Christmas.  It's a problem because my memory is weak at that point.  Hence, the beauty of the blog.

So, for my sake, I wanted to add a few more of our Christmas memories!

First, gingerbread house.  We've never made one and I was convinced that this year we would do it from scratch.  I have some hilarious pictures, but I'll spare you our pathetic attempt.  The result was a gingerbread tent.

Looks aside, remember the point of making a gingerbread house is to eat a lot of candy spend time together, and I assure you friends we enjoyed ourselves!

We also made a trip to Bellingrath Gardens.  Daddy was busy at work, but the boys and I enjoyed Dee's company.  The big boys walked the whole way and never once complained.  John was a little bit of a hand-full...determined to touch each light display...but it was a good time!

Our vacation time together was good.  The first week was slow and perfect!!  Lots of time together which is what I love.  The first morning out we had hot chocolate for breakfast!  P's just a little bit excited!

I think that covers most of essentials that I left out earlier.  Christmas is now cleaned up here, and it is time to tackle 2013!!  Maybe, just maybe, I will get that Christmas scrapbook done before December!

It's Just Stuff

I told myself this when I ran a load of laundry with a crayon in a pocket.  I opened my dryer to find this...

A hand-smocked outfit covered in orange and blue.  Also, the big boys church khaki's.  I was mad,  frustrated, etc.  But I thought about the families in Connecticut celebrating Christmas without their children and reminded myself that it's just stuff.

The phrase hit home again last night.  Chris and I had just poured a glass of wine.  I was on the phone with Susan in Winfield when we lost power.  I walked to my cell phone to send her a text that I would call later.  A text came in from my Rector stating "A tornado is headed to Levert Street.  Take cover immediately."

We huddled in the bathroom but the storm turned and did not affect our house.  In the bathroom, we got a frantic phone call from Dottie.  Her house had been hit.  She was fine.  Chris left in the midst of bad weather to be with her.  He couldn't get to her street, so he parked as close as he could.  It was then that he heard Trinity Episcopal Church took a direct hit.

There are only three places on Earth that I call home: my parent's house where I was raised, my house where Chris and I are raising our boys, and 1900 Dauphin Street.  Trinity Church has truly been my home for thirteen years.  In it, I have seen my sister get married, my boys get baptized, and my father-in-law laid to rest.  I have served on Vestry, Altar Guild, a capital campaign, a search committee, chaired committees, taught Sunday School.  I have served as a Lector and Oblation Bearer.  To say we are invested is an understatment.  Other than our children, Trinity is the most frequent recipient of Chris and my's time, talent, and treasure.

And my dear friends, I believe the building is lost.  It hasn't sunk in.  As Sara, our Rector's wife, called me last night from the sanctuary, I told her that I couldn't talk about it.  It was too delicate and too raw for me to experience in front of my boys.  I haven't been but the pictures are bad enough.

As I said in this post, home is where you make it.  Home isn't walls and neither is a church.  We'll be all right.  It's just stuff, right?

A Very Merry Christmas

The past few days have been full...full of time together, full of family, and full of friends.  It has truly been a wonderful and special Christmas.

Christmas Eve started with brunch with the Carothers before they headed out of town.  Susan and I shared the cooking duties and we had a great meal and a great time together.  Here's a special picture of Campbell and me in her Christmas dress I made.

The Springfields also dropped by for a bit before we began getting ready for a yummy steak meal with Dee.  Time for church...do we look tired??

and home for dessert.  We quickly put out cookies for Santa and got four very tired boys in bed.

Christmas morning came early....ten til five!  We made the boys wait until 6:30 am before we headed downstairs.

After that, it was a blur.  Toys, wrapping paper everywhere!

Eventually, we (well, most of us) got dressed and ready for a visit with GranGran and PopPop.  They stopped by to deliver more presents and enjoy another brunch!

Lastly, I begged Chris to take this picture to prove that I was here....

and now it isn't even 2:00 pm and it feels like 10:00 pm!  Chris and I are a little tired, but the big boys are going strong...at least there are plenty of trucks, Legos, board games, and new tool sets to keep them busy!

I hope you and yours have had a Merry Christmas too.  These years sure are special with little ones in the house!!
